There is a direct bus from Durham, (the X5 at 17:50, arrives 18:10) return on the 19:48 X15.

 Shorts will be fine; it is urban score event taking in most of the village. There are significant roads to cross so Juniors must be accompanied.

The map is a hybrid having paths and roads similar to openorienteerning map, but overlaid onto an OS streetview map showing housing and other features. Maprun will be available.
