Info: This event will be a 45 minute Score event – simply visit as many controls as you can in 45 minutes by running, walking or jogging. Suitable for all abilities!

Travel: Start, finish and registration are all located within Ashcroft Park, Stanhope. We will have our Club Feather flag so should be pretty obvious! Google Maps link ///regaining.blizzard.shower

The nearest bus stop is Stanhope Town Hall (0.4km/0.2miles, nos. 101, 101A and 102). Bus number 101 is the service to/from Bishop Auckland (including the rail station for services to/from Darlington) via Crook (where connection can be made from services from Durham). A service arrives at ~10:45am (departs Bishop Auckland Rail Station at 09:54, Crook at 10:15, this would require the 09:30 service from X46 Durham Bus Station).
Single tickets are £2 and there is also a £4 all day County Durham ticket (or £6.80 NE Combined Authority/£3 ticket available for aged 21 and under) which covers most operators within the County including Arriva and Weardale. Currently up to 3 children aged 11 and under can travel free with and adult many local buses.

Parking: There is free car parking available at the Durham Dales Centre (free, max stay 4 hours, Google Maps). This is a 0.6km/0.4miles walk from Registration. There is also on street car parking available in the vicinity of registration, but please be considerate of local residents.

Whilst there are no official bike racks nearby, there are several features which could be used to secure your bike adjacent to registration.

Registration will be manned throughout the event so bags etc. may be left here at the owner’s risk.

Entries: Entry on day, or pre-enter using the form (pre-entry would be appreciated so that we can estimate map numbers). Payment should be on the day.

Registration: Registration will be open from 11:00, with starts from 11:15 to 11:45.

Fees: Seniors – £3.00, Juniors – £1.50. Please bring correct change if possible. Note that under 16 should be accompanied/shadowed on the course by a parent/guardian for safety reasons (road crossings). Seniors are those who will be 21 or over on 31st December 2024.

Start: Starts will be from 11:15 to 11:45, same location as registration.

Punching: There will be no punches at controls, although it is planned that SI will be used to determine start and finish times – please bring your own SI if you have one (also available free of charge to borrow, lost or non-returned SI cards will be charged at £30).

Controls will be items of street furniture or similar with a simple question at each control to prove that you have visited (e.g. what number is this postbox?). Please bring a pen or similar to record your answer.

Map & Area: Stanhope and surrounding areas – Scale 1:10000, 10m contours. Open Street Map produced using Open Orienteering Mapper.

Terrain: A mixture of residential housing, local parks and rural footpaths including moorland, depending on route and controls chosen. Note some routes may take participants near or across busier roads.

Control descriptions: Control descriptions will be on the reverse of the map in the form of questions or clues (e.g. ‘lamppost number’) – there will be NO loose paper copies available on the day.

Facilities: Toilets available at the Durham Dales Centre (0.6km/0.4miles walk).

Safety: Area is a mix of urban areas (with usual hazards e.g. cars) and countryside footpaths. Competitors should avoid private areas and stick to the footpaths when on farmland or adjacent to steep ground and rivers. Part of the course is in the vicinity of the quarry – participants should stay on the paths in this area.

All competitors that have registered to start must report to registration after they finish (even if they do not wish their score/time to be recorded). Competitors are welcome to carry a phone when they compete. There will be a first aid kit and first aiders at registration.

The course will involve road crossings so Juniors aged under 16 should be accompanied/shadowed on the course by a parent/guardian.

Dogs: Dogs will be allowed but under close control (must be on a lead for fields containing livestock which are present in areas of the course) – please clean up after your dog.
